A Message from the Chair

Every day, I reflect upon what an honor and privilege it is to lead one of premier obstetrics and gynecology departments in the United States. Stanford Obstetrics and Gynecology consists of five divisions: Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics; Gynecology and Gynecologic Specialties; Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility; Gynecologic Oncology; and Reproductive, Stem Cell, and Perinatal Biology. The department includes 72 full-time faculty members, dozens of adjunct faculty, and over a hundred staff members supporting and fulfilling our mission to provide our exceptional and compassionate clinical care and education and cutting-edge research in an environment that promotes our diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellness.

We are excited to share our latest national ranking and program highlights throughout the pages of this publication. In the last five years, the department has increased multidisciplinary collaborations within the department and across the School of Medicine. A few examples I’d like to highlight are our Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology specialty, which you will read more about in this issue; the Placental Disorders Program, including seven medical and surgical subspecialties; and the development of the LGBTQ+ Health Program, which spans 16 departments.

Our department has also seen an expansion of service areas and clinical scope. We have expanded the geographic reach of our services, with notable expansions to the Central Valley, the South Bay, and the East Bay, and broadened the range of services offered, particularly in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology and LGBTQ+ care with new clinical capacity, in anal dysplasia and gender-affirming surgery.

I am grateful to our colleagues and co-workers for their resilience in uncertain times. Despite unimagined challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Stanford Obstetrics and Gynecology has demonstrated leadership and thoughtfulness when posed with challenges and has emerged from this period stronger than ever, with growing opportunities and enthusiasm about the future.

Please enjoy getting to know the work of our department through this issue of the magazine, and stay updated by following us on Instagram @StanfordObGyn.

Warm regards,
Leslee Subak, MD
