Stanford Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program
The Stanford fellowship program in Gynecologic Oncology is a three-year, fully-accredited program via ACGME with emphasis on clinical care, education, and research. One fellow is chosen per year. The first year of fellowship is dedicated to the fellow’s research thesis, with minimal clinical responsibilities. The program director will help identify a mentor and thesis for the fellow based on the fellow’s interests. There are many possibilities for a unique and impactful thesis given the rich and diverse research environment at Stanford University – past projects have addressed questions in translational science and epidemiology.
The second and third year of fellowship are dedicated to clinical care on the gynecologic oncology service. These years are split between inpatient and outpatient time at Stanford University Hospital and the Women’s Cancer Center. The second and third-year fellows rotate through inpatient and outpatient assignments on a monthly basis. The second-year fellow starts the year with a month-long SICU rotation, while the third-year fellow has the option of off-service time at the end of the year. The fellow is the leader of an inpatient team comprised of residents, medical students, and a PA. During the two clinical years, fellows will become facile in full-spectrum surgical care including open, laparoscopic, robotic, and reconstructive surgeries, as well as GI and GU procedures. Fellows will become expert consultants for OB and GYN surgeries, highly skilled in upper abdominal surgery, as well as experienced with the administration of HIPEC. Fellows will manage chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and their associated toxicities on inpatient and outpatient rotations.
Throughout the three years, fellows participate in journal club, tumor board, didactics, QI initiatives, and research and clinical trials meetings. All fellows attend the SGO annual meeting; additional conference attendance is based on each fellow’s research and educations goals. Further pursuit of research opportunities and other academic development during the clinical years is strongly encouraged.
