From the Desk of Dr. Leslee Subak

Summer Edition (July 1, 2021)

I want to take this moment to congratulate you for choosing Ob/Gyn. Our field uniquely serves communities and individuals in ways that are life-changing and profound, not only by advancing women’s health but also by supporting families as they grow and change. It is residency application season here at the School of Medicine, and so I’d like to highlight our well-rounded and engaging program. We emphasize a compassionate and committed educational environment where residents can train and prosper. Through the innovative and exciting work of our faculty, we support a wide breadth and depth of training opportunities from resident research and mentorship to advanced skills building in cutting-edge treatments such as fetal therapy. In addition, our residents gain experience with dynamic cross-collaborative specialties like our pediatric and adolescent gynecology team as well as comprehensive clinical care with diverse patient populations in family planning, fertility, and gender/LGBTQ+ health.

As a department, we are continuing our internal equity journey to foster a deeper understanding of implicit bias and anti-racism. So far, our learning opportunities have included diversity, equity, and inclusion workshops; a town hall hosted by myself and Dr. Katherine Bianco; and interactive presentations about disability, racism, and social justice. These efforts and initiatives are led by our active DEI committees, which already have plans in place to continue this work for the coming months and beyond. In addition, we will be hosting two student trainees over the summer as part of the Stanford Clinical Opportunity for Residency Experience (SCORE) program. SCORE recognizes that Stanford Medicine’s ideal of true community engagement is unlikely to occur without a workforce that is diverse in many ways, and thus provides a four-week residential clinical training program to medical students underrepresented in medicine.

And so, even in the summertime, the Ob/Gyn department is abuzz with new faces and initiatives. I am looking forward to more exciting work in the coming months, and sharing with you more frequently. Thank you for your support!
