Maternal-Fetal Medicine & Obstetrics

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics Division at Stanford University School of Medicine is a premiere patient care, teaching and research center.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide the highest quality care for women experiencing both normal and complicated pregnancies in a collaborative setting with our colleagues in multiple other disciplines including pediatrics, cardiology, surgery and anesthesia.

We provide the full range of services and amenities for our patients with normal pregnancies, as well as specialized care as needed. Our patients have ready access to genetic counseling and prenatal diagnostic options including comprehensive and targeted ultrasounds, first trimester screening, chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis and percutaneous umbilical blood sampling, among others.

Our nationally distinguished division members have special expertise in:

  • prenatal genetics
  • endocrinology
  • autoimmune disorders
  • preterm labor
  • multiple gestations
  • perinatal infectious diseases

We currently not only serve the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital community, but also have seven state-approved Perinatal Diagnositc Centers, serving patients spanning Redwood City. Santa Cruz, Salinas and Modesto areas.

We provide outstanding care and support for complex fetal patients, expectant mothers and families at our Fetal and Pregnancy Health Program. Furthermore, our specialized Program for Placental Disorders provides comprehensive and collaborative care to pregnant women with abnormal placentation (previa, accrete, increta or percreta).

An important dimension of our clinical expertise is our teaching and research commitments. We train the next generation of obstetricians and gynecologists and maternal fetal medicine specialists who will be responsible for the care of women and advancement of the field in the future. This educational process is tightly integrated into our clinical care and allows for outstanding and compassionate patient care in a highly supervised setting.

Our Research

Our research involvement is extensive. Our Division engages in many clinical trials attempting to address important and unanswered questions. We have studies that cover a broad range of obstetrical care issues and encourage our patients to participate in these studies if they are so inclined. Additionally, our division is a part of leading research consortiums and collaborations, including March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center and the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network research consortium.

We offer the very best in normal and high risk obstetrical care in a safe and compassionate setting.
